UK Visitor Visa: Frequently Asked Questions

01. What is the "Standard Visitor" route?
It is a single visa category that covers tourism, visiting family, short-term study (up to 6 months), and most business activities.
02. Can I stay longer than 6 months?
Standard visitors are limited to 180 days per visit. Staying longer requires a specific long-stay visa (like Work or Student tiers).
03. What is a "Multi-Entry" visit visa?
UK visas are usually multiple-entry, meaning you can leave and return to the UK as many times as you want during the visa validity.
04. Do I need to provide a TB Certificate?
Only if you are a resident of a listed country (like India or Pakistan) and applying for a visa for longer than 6 months.
05. What are the 2, 5, and 10-year visas?
These are "Long-term Standard Visitor" visas. They cost more but allow multiple visits over several years without re-applying.
06. What financial documents are best?
Bank statements from the last 6 months, pay slips, and tax returns (ITR). Avoid "large unexplained deposits" just before applying.
07. Can a UK friend sponsor my trip?
Yes. They must provide an invitation letter, their UK passport/BRP copy, and evidence of their financial ability to support you.
08. Is there an age limit for visitors?
No. However, travelers under 18 must provide a consent letter from parents and details of their stay arrangements.
09. What is the "Priority Service" fee?
It is an optional fee paid to VFS/TLS to move your application to the front of the queue, usually resulting in a 5-day decision.
10. Can I attend business meetings?
Yes, attending meetings, conferences, and site visits is permitted. You cannot be "employed" by the UK company, however.
11. What is VFS Global / TLScontact?
They are commercial partners of UKVI that handle document scanning and biometric collection. They do not make the visa decision.
12. Do I need to book flights first?
No. UKVI actually advises against booking non-refundable travel until your visa is granted. A flight itinerary is sufficient.
13. What is an "Entry Clearance"?
This is the technical term for the visa sticker (vignette) placed in your passport by the British Embassy/Consulate.
14. Can I get a refund if refused?
No. Visa fees are for processing the application, not for the outcome. Once biometrics are done, fees are non-refundable.
15. What is the 180-day rule?
You should not spend more than 6 months in the UK in any 12-month period to avoid being flagged as a "de-facto resident."
16. Do I need an IELTS for a visit visa?
No. English language requirements only apply to long-term Student, Work, and Settlement visas.
17. Can I switch to a Work Visa in the UK?
Generally, no. You cannot switch from a Visitor visa to any other visa type while inside the UK. You must apply from your home country.
18. What is the Immigration Health Surcharge?
Visitors do not pay this. It is a mandatory fee for Student/Work visas that grants access to the NHS.
19. How do I track my application?
You can track it via the VFS/TLS portal or wait for the email notification saying "a decision has been made."
20. What is a "BRP"?
A Biometric Residence Permit. Visitors do not get these; they only get a sticker in their passport. BRPs are for stays over 6 months.
